Tar sands mining topic of public meeting
March 14, 2014
HATTON — MS Industries’ proposed plan to surface mine oil bearing Hartselle sandstone will be discussed during a public meeting Tuesday at Hatton Elementary School.
The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the school at 6536 Lawrence 236.
The Wolf Springs-based company has purchased property in Lawrence County and is securing mining leases in Colbert County.
“Many residents have serious concerns about this proposed surface mining, including its possible effects on human health, water quality, noise and air pollution, destruction of the land and the limitations of the reclamation of the land after the mining is finished,” said Wolf Springs resident Janice Barrett, who is organizing the meeting.
The meeting will feature a presentation on the Hartselle sandstone formation by Jim Lacefield, author of “Lost Worlds in Alabama Rocks,” a book about the state’s geology.
